Protest against patent on broccoli at the European Patent Office

26 October 2011 / About 300 farmers and representatives of environmental and development aid organizations demonstrate against patents on plants and animals in Munich. On this day, the Technical Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office holds a hearing on the patent on broccoli and the implementation of the decision of the Enlarged Board of Appeal regarding the non-patentability of traditional breeding methods. After the European Patent Office had announced that it would maintain a patent on conventionally bred broccoli owned by the US company Monsanto, the demonstrators call on the German government - in particular on Minister of Agriculture, Ilse Aigner - to take legal actions against the patent.
